Recycling Your Pizza Boxes. A Simple Breakdown.

Cardboard is found to be a fantastic material when it comes to disposables due to its ability to be recycled. Recycling your pizza boxes is a straightforward task for people in the United Kingdom as they can be disposed of in the corresponding paper collection bin for your local constituency. Here are some notes on Pizza Box recycling that we have found and picked up over the years that we'll lay out here in our latest post, looking at what the recycling process entails and clearing up some myths and misinformation.

Cleanliness?

When recycling pizza boxes, it is important to remove any large pieces of food. What has become commonly misstated is that greasy pizza boxes are unable to be recycled. This has been found to be untrue, boxes are still able to be recycled.

The Recycling Process:

We'll start this by assuming you have already disposed of your pizza box in the adequate recycling bin and has been collected by the hard-working waste management folk. The paper waste collected must first be sorted into corrugated and non-fluted boards.

These boards are then shredded and mixed with other chemicals to create a pulp. This pulp is then mixed with wood chips to provide some reinforcement to the substance.

Then the pulp must be passed through multiple filters to remove any foreign entities. Waste recycling plants make use of a centrifuge that will remove small traces of plastic and metal. Once filtered the pulp is chemically cleaned.

To finish the recycling process, the pulp is spread out to enable it to dry and have any water removed. Once dried, large reels of paper can be formed which can then be used to form more paper board and corrugated products.

Outside of the Box:

Recycling cardboard doesn't always have to be done through this traditional route, many other approaches can be taken to ensure that these boxes don't go to waste.

Disposable Surfaces: These boxes can be used as temporary surfaces when participating in messy activities like arts and crafts.

Animal Bedding: Boxes can be donated to local animal shelters as they can be used to make beds for small animals like Guinea Pigs and Hamsters. (This time however make sure you are donating the clean sections of these boxes.)

Compost: Cardboard is also a compostable substance so allow these products to return to the nature in which they came from.
